From almond farmer to pilot, this Wonderful Scholar proves the sky isn’t the limit

Jon’s story is one of resilience, determination, and a relentless pursuit of his passions

Born and raised on an almond farm in Wasco, California, Jon's journey has been anything but conventional. From his early days driving tractors alongside his father to his current role as a commercial pilot, Jon's path has been marked by hard work, ambition, and an unwavering commitment to his dreams.

Growing up on the farm, Jon developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for agriculture. Despite the demanding nature of farm life, he thrived in this environment, eagerly absorbing knowledge and honing his skills. Whether it was helping his dad with the almond trees or operating equipment at the crack of dawn, Jon embraced every opportunity to learn and grow. This includes enrolling in the Wonderful Agriculture Career Prep program (Ag Prep) during his time at Wasco High School, and graduating from high school with his associate’s degree in Mechanized Agriculture, which taught him how to merge traditional agricultural practices with modern technology. Through the program, he expanded his understanding of sustainable farming, and it instilled in him the importance of continuous learning and innovation.

Coming from a lineage of farmers, Jon watched his father’s hands-on-approach and dedication while working on automated irrigation systems for Paramount Farms. His passion for agriculture was undeniable. However, Jon saw early on areas where agricultural practices could be updated.

At the age of 14, Jon's fascination with drones opened a new avenue of exploration, merging technology with agriculture. This passion stemmed from his belief that farmers were undervalued due to the absence of technological innovations supporting them. Curious to see how his family’s property looked from an aerial perspective, he taught himself drone photography and obtained his Part 107 license enabling him to become a certified drone pilot. This experience became a natural transition into aviation. Despite having no family background in flying, Jon was drawn to the skies and their role in assisting agricultural communities.

Jon overcame numerous obstacles on his path to becoming a commercial pilot. He says, “There were many people in my town who said to stick with what you know – agriculture, but now I’m in a position where I’m still in the agriculture business and paving a path for myself in the pilot industry.”

From his first flight in a small plane to earning his multi-commercial FAA certificate, Jon's journey was marked by challenges and triumphs. However, he credits his experience in the Ag Prep program as a key moment in realizing there was no limit in his pursuits.

The happiness I feel every day, doing what I love, is the motivation I need.
